Learning Happens Everywhere

Short Stories

Length of Time:   8-10 Class periods

Description

Using short stories, students will learn to identify those elements that are key to most fictional works: plot, narrator, setting, characters, action, tone, and theme. These stories will give students the opportunity to hone their knowledge of the following literary terms/figures of speech: juxtaposition, satire, symbolism, imagery, metaphor, simile, and irony (both tragic and comic).  In addition, students will work to master the structure of the short story and its components: setting (exposition), conflict, rising action, climax(turning point), resolution (denoument), and falling action. Each story has a vocabulary list and study questions. A writing assignment and short story analysis template are also included.

You are welcome to add favorite stories that you wish for your students.
