Dr. Debra Block

Debra Block

Debra Block has been an educator for 40 years, over 20 in the classroom, teaching everyone from 4th graders to graduate students, but mostly Middle School and High School English and History classes. For the last 20 years, she has worked as an independent consultant, writing curriculum, coaching teachers, and providing professional development to other educators.

Debra presents workshops on general topics such as Accountable Talk, Reflective Practice, and Assessment as well as Content Focused courses in Social Studies and Language Arts. She also works evaluating programs for MA DESE, helping schools revise their curriculum, and training immigrants for their citizenship exams. She spent 8 years in an ongoing consultancy as the founding Director of Education in the Map Division of Boston Public Library where she did all of these tasks, as well as worked in a curatorial role on exhibitions, taking materials ‘from the archive to the rug.’

The one common thread to all of these endeavors has been the great privilege to learn from every experience. She holds an A.B in History from Brown University, an M.A. in Special Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania.
