Different Maps of Africa, HS

Length of Time:   30-45 Minutes

Description

Maps have many different purposes. Political maps convey territory associated with the established boundaries of states, countries, and continents. Maps may also provide information on other types of groupings, by language, ethnic background, or tribe. By exploring maps of same area with two different purposes, the viewer may be able to note the multiple identities of those who reside in these areas. Finally, the symbols that a cartographer uses convey subtle attitudes about the time and place.

Essential Questions

How do maps convey both factual information as well as more subtle attitudes?
