The Satire of Animal Farm

Length of Time:   6-8 Class Periods

Description

George Orwell’s Animal Farm is a deceptively simple tale that conveys deep criticism of the economic and politic systems that resulted in Stalin’s Russia.  More broadly, what happens to ideals corrupted, regardless of their noble intent?  This unit allows you to approach the topic from both the literary and historic perspectives.  Using detailed study questions and writing assignments (in class and out), students will explore both the medium and the message presented.

Essential Questions

Is satire an effective way to communicate political and cultural perspectives?
